18 Lessons I’ve Learned about Blogging

In November 2002, I first came across the word “blog” when a friend emailed me a link and suggested I try starting one. Within just 24 hours, I had created my very first blog (it was on Blogspot and no longer exists today). Since then, I’ve managed more than 20 blogs—some have lasted, others haven’t. Over time, I moved from blogging as a hobby to doing it part-time, and eventually made it my full-time work.

Throughout this journey, I’ve faced plenty of challenges, reached important milestones, and had many moments worth celebrating. Looking back, I often think about how helpful it would have been if someone had shared some key lessons with me in the beginning. So, here are a couple of important things I’ve learned from over 20 years of blogging.

1. Luck plays a role

Over the years, I’ve realized that while I’ve worked hard, there are many people who are just as dedicated—and even more talented—who haven’t experienced the same level of success. That’s why I believe luck does play a part, even if it’s not the only factor.

In my case, luck showed up in different ways: meeting the right people at the right time, discovering advertising methods that worked well for my blogs, accidentally creating successful sites, and getting links from larger blogs that brought in even more attention. These moments made a big difference.

The key is to make the most of lucky opportunities when they come. Instead of just enjoying them, think about how you can extend or build on that success.

2. Hard work is essential

There’s a saying that goes, “The harder you work, the luckier you get,” and I believe there’s truth in that. Success doesn’t come without effort.

While many people promote the idea of making easy money online, I haven’t found any path that doesn’t require real work. Whether it’s improving your health, building relationships, or succeeding in your career, effort and consistency are always necessary.

That said, hard work alone isn’t everything. I’ve seen plenty of hardworking bloggers who didn’t achieve the results they hoped for. Still, without putting in the effort, success is very unlikely.

If you want to reach new goals, you’ll need to step outside your comfort zone and try things you haven’t done before. That often means putting in serious time and effort.
